Psalm 81-Listening to the LORD

Truth for Truckers” *April 21, 2014* Psalm 81  “Listening to the LORD”

The conclusion of the whole matter in this Psalm is good advice to the 21st century Christian: “Oh that My people had hearkened unto Me, and Israel had walked in My ways!”(v.13). Listening to the voice of God and obeying Him by walking in His ways seems to be a simple, easy way to live life and be blessed by God. But, the repeated cycles in Hebrew history show just the opposite for the majority of the time.

Even today, they continue to reject their Messiah, the Lord Jesus Christ, and they literally avoid the Scriptures where He is obviously found in their synagogue readings of the Old Testament Law, the Prophets and the Psalms which readings are controlled worldwide! Just as in His days upon earth when they knew he was sent from God because of the miracles He performed, but, their envy caused them to have Jesus crucified and then, they rejected and persecuted His Church in every corner of the world!

Notice what God promises in the closing verses of this Psalm if Israel had hearkened to Him and walked in His ways:
1.      “I should have subdued their enemies, and turned My hand against their adversaries
2.      “The haters of the LORD should have submitted themselves unto Him
3.      “He should have fed them with finest of the wheat: and honey out of the rock should I have satisfied thee.”

We can claim these blessings from God if we will simply obey by listening to His voice from the written Word and take heed by walking with Him day by day, hour by hour, minute by minute as we abide in the Lord Jesus Christ just as He commands: “Abide in Me and I in you as the branch cannot bear fruit of itself except it abide in the Vine. I am the Vine ye are the branches, he that abides in Me and I in him the same brings forth much fruit for without Me ye can do NOTHING! (John 15:4, 5)

Psalm 79-Revenge the blood of Thy servant

Truth for Truckers” *April 19, 2014* Psalm 79  “Revenge the blood of Thy servants”

This strong request in the midst of this Psalm is asking God to bring vengeance upon those who have killed God’s servants, those who have defiled the Temple, those who have laid Jerusalem on heaps. This time of Israel’s defeat and destruction is likely the period of time when Antiochus Epiphanes and his Syrian armies destroyed the nation of Israel only to be defeated later by the Jews called Maccabees according to the historic accounts found in the Apocrypha which occurred in the second century before Christ. That is the setting of this entire Psalm. Antiochus Epiphanes is an accurate type of the coming Antichrist for he also will defile the Temple which will be rebuilt on the Temple mount in Jerusalem.

When the Fifth Seal is opened in Revelation 6:9-11 there will be a similar request to God for His vengeful judgment: “And when He had opened the Fifth Seal, I saw under altar the souls of them that were slain for the Word of God, and for the testimony which they held: And they cried with a loud voice, saying, How long O Lord holy and true, dost Thou not judge and avenge our blood on them that dwell on the earth? Notice, God’s judgment has not yet begun upon those who have martyred these saints, but, in (v.17) God’s wrath which is the Day of the Lord is announced and just about to be poured out upon the unbelieving world which overall future situation will be much like the situation described in Psalm 79.
I. Describing the Desperate Situation (v.1-5)
   A. O God, the heathen are come into Thy inheritance
   B. Thy holy Temple have they defiled
   C. They have laid Jerusalem on heaps
   D. The dead bodies of Thy servants have they given to be meat unto the fowls heaven
   E.  The flesh of Thy saints unto the beasts of the earth
   F.  Their blood have they shed like water round about Jerusalem
   G.  We are become a reproach to our neighbors
II. Demanding Answers and Directing Actions of the Lord (v.6-12)
A.     How long LORD?
B.     How long will Thou be angry forever?
C.     How long shall Thy jealousy burn like fire?
D.     Pour out Thy wrath upon the heathen that have not known Thee
E.      Pour out Thy wrath upon the kingdoms that have not called upon Thy name
F.      For they have devoured Jacob, and laid waste his dwelling place.
G.     O remember not against us former iniquities
H.     Let Thy tender mercies speedily precede us: for we are brought very low
I.        Help us O God of our salvation, for the glory of Thy name and deliver us
J.       And purge away our sins for Thy names sake
K.     Why should the heathen say “Where is their God?”
L.      Let Him be known among the heathen in our sight by the revenging of the blood of Thy servants
M.    Let the sighing of the prisoner come before Thee according to the greatness of Thy power
N.     Preserve Thou those that are appointed to die.
O.     And render unto our neighbors sevenfold into their bosom their reproach wherewith they have
Reproached Thee O Lord.
III. Deliberate Adoration of God (v.13)
A.     So we Thy people and the sheep of Thy pasture will give Thee thanks forever
B.     We will show forth Thy praise to all generations

This example of going to God describing the situation and then laying it all upon His shoulders is the avenue to spiritual and physical success. It all depends upon God, all of the actions necessary to bring to pass victory in the midst of utter defeat and destruction. This plan for getting the victory God’s way by His intervention is the way to peace, joy and love for God resulting in praise and thanksgiving before the outcome is known. He is able to do exceeding abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that works within us! Follow His plan for success, regardless of the dire circumstances, lay it on Him and rest in the Lord.

Psalm 78-The Rebellions of Israel

Truth for Truckers” *April 18, 2014* Psalm 78  “The Rebellions of Israel”
Israel’s history of folly and rebellious backsliding is the theme of this the second longest Psalm of instruction written by the musician Asaph. There are twenty specific acts of rebellion during seven individual progressive cycles of rebellion recorded by the Psalmist spanning a great portion of the history of the nation of Israel, with emphasis directed upon their forty years of wandering in the wilderness.

After giving a strong introduction in (v.1-8) which includes this initial call from God: ‘Give ear, O My people, to My law: incline your ears to the Words of My mouth.’ (v.1) Asaph begins his instruction: ‘I will open My mouth in a parable: I will utter dark sayings of old, ‘Which we have heard and known, and our fathers have told us. We will not hide them from their children, showing to the generation to come the praises of the LORD, and His strength, and His wonderful works that He hath done. For He established a testimony in Jacob, and appointed a Law in Israel, which He commanded our fathers, that they should make them known to their children: That the generation to come might know them, even the children which should be born, who should arise and declare them to their children: That they might set their hope in God, and not forget the works of God, but keep His commandments’ (v.2-7).

Then the rebels are described: ‘And might not be as their fathers; A stubborn and rebellious generation; A generation that set not their heart aright and whose spirit was not steadfast with God.’(v.8)
1.      First Rebellion (v.9-16)
2.      Second Rebellion (v.17-20)
3.      Third Rebellion (v.21-29)
4.      Fourth Rebellion (v.30-32)
5.      Fifth Rebellion (v.33-39)
6.      Sixth Rebellion (v.40-55)
7.      Seventh Rebellion (v.56-58)

From (v.59-64) God delivered them over to fierce, devastating and deserved destruction and almost as immediately as He began this unmistakable chastisement He ‘Awaked as one out of sleep’ and smote the enemies of Israel resulting in His eventual choosing of Judah instead of Ephraim and He chose David who: “Fed them according to the integrity of his heart; and guided them by the skillfulness of his hands.” (v.72) which was what they needed, at least for a period of eighty years during the rule of David and his son Solomon, Israel prospered and experienced a certain level of peace. This ends the history that Asaph knew and recorded as he was the leader of the music ministry in the Temple during David’s reign. Israel’s divided kingdom and all of the chaos that it brought with rebellious and wicked kings was yet future.
