“Truth for Truckers” *June 15, 2014* Psalm 135 “Keep
yourselves from idols”
The first Psalm after the fifteen Songs of
Degrees focuses upon blessing the LORD Jehovah. In (v.1-4) the Psalmist starts
with multiple commands for servants to be praising the LORD and ends the Psalm
with multiple commands to bless the LORD (v.19-21). The fourteen verses between
these two stanzas of praising and blessing the LORD lists His great works
(v.5-14) and compares Him with “The idols
of the heathen” (v.15-18).
The application for us, Drivers,
is manifold because of the repeated commands that apply to all Christians. But,
the one topic concerning idols is of special interest to me as there was a time
when my life was totally given over to things and amassing wealth and man toys,
motorcycles, race cars etc. and these idols controlled my life with little time
for family.
Then, the Lord saved me and things changed
drastically for the good. However, once we are saved idols can still enter into
our lives and we can be given over once again to things that are not the will
of God. When we neglect our family and make our job our idol, or when we focus
upon the things of the world and our own desires this can qualify as idolatry.
The Scripture tells us that covetousness
is idolatry (Colossians 3:5), so, Drivers, the desire for things that we do not
have is a form of idolatry. This is the area the Lord is pointing to in this
message for us today. Where do you stand on this topic? “Little children keep yourselves from idols.” (I John 5:21)
