“Truth for Truckers” *June 7, 2014* Psalm 127 “The Vanity
of Man”
On
three occasions the Psalmist uses the word “Vain” (v.1, 2) to describe
activities of man:
1. The house-building labor of man is vain unless it is
the Lord’s will to build the house
2. The watching of the watchman is vain unless the Lord
keeps the city
3. The activities of man are vain for it is the Lord
who gives His beloved sleep
Even the children born of man are an
heritage of the LORD: and the fruit of womb is His reward. Children are shown
to be like arrows in the hand of a mighty man, so are children of the youth.
Happiness comes from having your quiver full of arrows i.e.children. These men
shall not be ashamed/disappointed, but they shall speak with the enemies in the
gate placing them in a position of power and influence in the city.
The vanity of man is compared with the
power of God to build, to watch, to give sleep and finally to give children to
those who desire to have His blessing of “The
fruit of the womb” as His reward. Happiness comes from a full quiver or
many children during the younger years. Having the ability to confront the
enemy in the gate is also the blessing of God.
