“Truth for Truckers” *May 13, 2014* Psalm 103 “Bless
the LORD O my soul”
Here is the Psalm for the day, the 13th
day of the month. It highlights (6) ‘Bless
the LORD’ commands that all children of God
should familiarize themselves with, for blessing the LORD is our duty and
privilege as we make this journey called life here on earth. We should standout
as loving children of God, willing to ‘Bless
the LORD, O my soul: and all that is within me bless His holy name.’(v.1)
The first two ‘Bless the LORD’ declarations made by David calls upon us to bless
the holy Name of God. His name is Jehovah, and now we also know it as Jesus,
similar in meaning but still the same God for out God is one, and there is none
else. But, the holy Name of Jesus is a name which is above every name,
therefore we should bless the LORD through acknowledging this holy, pure and
undefiled name of Jesus our Lord and Savior by praising His Name thereby satisfying
the command to bless the LORD.
Secondly, David continues by saying: ‘Bless the LORD, O my soul and forget not
all His benefits’. Then he lists five major benefits that God supplies to
His children: ‘Who forgives all thine
iniquities’ is the first and the most important for without forgiveness of
sin we could not approach the LORD, we would still be condemned sinners and on
our way to a godless hell, without the forgiveness which is through the
precious Blood of Jesus (Ephesians 1:7).
Third, the benefit of physical healing: ‘Who heals all thy diseases’. Not only
does God supply the spiritual healing of forgiving our sin, but He also
supplies miraculous physical healing though the atoning Blood of Jesus for “By His stripes we are healed” Isaiah 53:4).
Yes, there is healing through the most powerful and efficacious Atonement of
the Lord Jesus Christ! ‘Who redeems thy
life from destruction’ is next in order and this speaks of the eternal
fiery pit of hell. He literally has bought us back out of Satan’s slave market
of sin, so that we would not suffer eternal torment in hell which was designed
for the Devil and his angels.
Next, the LORD ‘Crowns thee with loving-kindness and tender mercies’ illustrating the act of beautifying the soul
with marvelous acts of the undeserved mercies of God. This is just like Jesus
the Lord of lords and King of kings, to crown His own children with the
manifold blessings of God. And the last benefit, here, shows the outworking of
physical sustenance for we are promised ‘My
God shall supply all your need according to His riches in Christ Jesus’
(Philippians 4:13) David puts it this way: ‘Who satisfies thy mouth with good things; so that thy youth is renewed
like the eagles.’
The last four of the ‘Bless the LORD’ admonitions occur at the end of the Psalm where
David addresses the heavenly host that minister in the presence of the LORD: ‘Bless the LORD, ye His angels, that excel in
strength, that do His commandments, hearkening unto the voice of His Word.
Bless the LORD, all ye His hosts; ye ministers of His that do His pleasure.
Bless the LORD, all His works in all places of His dominion: bless the LORD, O
my soul.’ (v.20-22)
This call to the heavenly hosts to bless
the LORD demonstrates the importance of blessing the person of the LORD, and,
therefore, should move us to be involved in doing the same with our lives, with
our service, with our offerings of spiritual sacrifices to the God of heaven, in
thanksgiving for His so great salvation which He has freely bestowed upon us
through the Lord Jesus Christ!
