“Truth for Truckers” *April 25, 2014* Psalm 86 “Teach
me Thy way, O LORD”
David is demonstrating how to pray with a
designed purpose. His ultimate purpose is wanting to be blessed by God and one
of the key verses is (v.11) “Teach me Thy
way, O LORD; I will walk in Thy truth; unite my heart to fear Thy name.”
The sequence of these requests shows how to get results from God in order to
live life under His direction and approval by praying with a designed purpose.
There are fifteen requests in this Psalm
but these in (v.11) strike at the core of David’s desires. First of all he is
asking God to show him His ways. David wants to know how the Lord does what He
does so that he can incorporate the ways of God into his life. This should be the
fervent desire of each and every Believer. If we know the ways of God we can
and should walk in them.
Paul wrote this command to the saints in
Colosse: “As ye have therefore received
Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk ye in Him.” (Colossians 2:6) Here Paul is
emphasizing walking in Christ by faith which is how we received the Lord! David
also simply wants an inside knowledge of the faith-filled ways of God which he desires
to utilize in his life in order to do the will of God.
Then, after promising God to walk in His
truth David asks God to unite his heart to fear His name. This request from God
to unite his heart is in essence asking God to bring all of David’s being into
focus upon doing what God reveals in His truth which is where the will of God
is found for each and every life situation. A parallel request of David is
found in Psalm 143:10: “Teach me to do
Thy will for Thou are my God, Thy Spirit is good, lead me into the land of
uprightness.”
This could well be my own life
verse for if God teaches me to do His will what else must I ask? What more can
be requested or prayed for in life? The God who spoke this world into existence
is ever waiting, wanting, ready and able to teach us to do His will! So,
Drivers, let us also pray this powerful prayer to the Lord and get on with doing
the will of God and live rejoicing with the blessings of God upon our lives!
