“Truth for Truckers” *May 16, 2014* Psalm 106 “Seven
Cycles of Sin”
After the five verse introduction this (48)
verse Psalm lists the sad and sinful history of the nation of Israel. But, the
faithfulness of God is highlighted during their times of unfaithfulness as He
continued to deliver them from their many calamities. The writer is unknown
although his introduction in (v.1-5) shows his desire to be obedient to his
God.
Then, in (v.6-12) the first cycle is
recorded: “Our fathers understood not Thy
wonders in Egypt, they remembered not the multitude of Thy mercies; but provoked Him at the sea, even at
the Red Sea.” (v.7) But, immediately God responds: “Nevertheless He saved them for His name’s sake, that He might make His
mighty power to be known. He rebuked the Red Sea, also, and it was dried up: so
He led them through the depths, as through the wilderness…He saved
them…redeemed them…the waters covered their enemies…then believed they His
words, they sang His praise.”(v.9-11)
The
list below tells the story of the hundreds of years of Israel’s history
documented in this lengthy Psalm:
#1
They provoked God (v.6-12)
#2
They forgot God (v.13-15)
#3
They envied Moses (v.16-18)
#4
They made a calf: Idolatry (v.19-23)
#5
They believed not God’s Word (v.24-27)
#6
They joined themselves to Baal…thus they provoked God to anger (v.28-33)
#7
They did not destroy the nations, mingled among the heathen, served their
idols, sacrificed children etc. (v.34-43)
Paul
tells us:“Now all these things happened
unto them for examples: and they are written for our admonition, upon whom the
ends of the world are come. Wherefore let him that thinks he stands take heed
lest he fall.” ( I Corinthians 10:11, 12) So, Drivers, these histories written in the O.T. are
for our learning…let us take heed!
