Psalm 96-Sing unto the LORD a new song

Truth for Truckers” *May 6, 2014* Psalm 96 “Sing unto the LORD a new song

The opening verse records the third time “New song” appears in the Scripture. “New song” is in the book of Psalms six times, once in Isaiah 42:10 and twice in the book of the Revelation of Jesus Christ. (Revelation 5:9, 14:3). Every time it appears it involves a high level of praise to God, His Word or Works. And, once again, this Psalm is entirely given over to praising the God of heaven.

And, the reason this emphasis and the amount of praise we are presented with in the book of Psalms is that praise is one of the missing ingredients in the life of the Church and Believers in general. We need a good hefty dose of the Psalms in our life in order to correct this deficit. Think about it Drivers, when was the last time you spontaneously gave praise to God for all of the blessings He has showered upon us as citizens of His Kingdom? When have we given Him praise publicly as a normal part of our daily walk?

Psalm 96 contains (14) definite COMMANDS for Believers to praise the Lord:
1.      O sing unto the LORD a new song
2.      Sing unto the LORD all the earth
3.      Sing unto the LORD
4.      Bless His name
5.      Show forth His salvation
6.      Declare His glory among the heathen (Witnessing to the lost)
7.      Give unto the LORD, O ye kindreds of the people
8.      Give unto the LORD glory and strength
9.      Give unto the LORD the glory due unto His name
10.  Bring an offering
11.  Come into His courts
12.  O worship the LORD in the beauty of holiness
13.  Fear before Him all the earth
14.  Say among the heathen that the LORD reigns

The end of the Psalm (v.10b-13) focuses upon the Second Coming of the LORD to judge the earth which is yet future.  His judgment, which is called The Day of the Lord, is the most prophesied time in Scripture (Revelation 8-19) which in essence is the very reason for this powerful Psalm of praise to the Lord: “He shall judge the people righteously. Let the heavens rejoice, and let the earth be glad; let the sea roar, and the fullness thereof. Let the field be joyful, and all that is therein: then shall all the trees of the wood rejoice Before the LORD for He comes to judge the earth: He shall judge the world with righteousness, and the people with His Truth.” (v.10b-13)
