Psalm 120-A Cry of Distress

Truth for Truckers” *May 30, 2014* Psalm 120 “A Cry of Distress

This is the first of (15) consecutive Psalms or Songs of Degrees which were sung first when the Ark of the Covenant was brought into Jerusalem by David from the house of Obed-edom  (I Chronicles 13). This interpretation comes from the actual meaning of the word “Degrees” which can be translated “Going up” for when you approach the Temple from any direction you must go up for the Temple was built upon a mountain.

This is true when you approach the city of Jerusalem itself as it is surrounded by mountains: “They that trust in the LORD shall be as mount Zion which cannot be removed, but abides forever. As the mountains are round about Jerusalem, so the LORD is round about His people from henceforth even forever.” (Psalm 125:1, 2) which is found in another of the Songs of Degrees or Psalms of Going Up.

But, the title of this Song of Degrees is “A Cry of Distress” which does not seem to fit the subject of going up to Jerusalem or the Temple. The answer to this is the Psalm was not written at the time of the Ark being brought up to the Temple, but it must have been written earlier during the life of David. The Psalmist is dealing with someone who was a liar (v.2, 3) and a hater of peace (v.6, 7). So, the cry of distress goes forth to the Lord and lays the burden upon Him.

This is a good example for us Drivers. Take it to the Lord and leave it there. He will deal with these rascals His way. And, His way is always the best way for “Vengeance is Mine, I will repay, says the Lord.”(Romans 12:19). His desire is that we abide in Him in peace regardless of the situation, His peace must be our goal. Rest in Him brethren!
