Psalm 118-O give thanks unto the LORD for He is good

Truth for Truckers” *May 28, 2014* Psalm 118 “O give thanks unto the LORD for He is good

This somewhat lengthy Psalm begins and ends with a very thorough statement of praise: “O give thanks unto the LORD for He is good: because His mercy endures forever.” (v.1, 29) The Psalm is then divided up in a number of sections highlighting numerous things that we must be thankful to the LORD for these things which He has done.

But, in the midst of these different sections is a prophecy concerning the Lord Jesus Christ: “The Stone which the builders refused is become the Head Stone of the corner. This is the Lord’s doing; it is marvelous in our eyes.” (v.22, 23) The Lord Jesus Christ is “The Stone which the builders [the Jews] refused”.

Jesus quoted this verse when he was battling the chief priests and Pharisees concerning His identity: “Jesus said unto them, Did ye never read in the Scriptures, The Stone which the builders rejected, the same is become the Head of the corner: this is the Lord’s doing, and it is marvelous in our eyes?” (Matthew 21:42)

Peter also told the rulers of the people, and elders of Israel: “This is the Stone which was set at nought of you builders, which is become the Head of the corner. Neither is there salvation in any other; for there is no other name under heaven given among men whereby we must be saved.” (Acts 4:11, 12) Paul too wrote along these same lines: “For other foundation can no man lay than that is laid, which is Jesus Christ.” (I Corinthians 3:11)

The Psalm, a thousand years before the Lord Jesus arrived on planet earth gave this remarkable and miraculous prophecy concerning how the Lord would be rejected and refused by the religious establishment of the Jews, the people He came to minister to at His first Coming. Our God is truly the only God who can tell the future in His precious Word.
Therefore, Drivers, we must give thanks to Him for sending His Son to earth to suffer, die and rise again for our sins!
