“Truth for
Truckers” *April 7, 2014* Psalm 67 “Things to come”
This seemingly obscure Psalm has within its verses powerful prophecies
of events yet to come. ‘He will show you
things to come’ (John 16:13) the Lord Jesus Christ said when speaking of the
Holy Spirit’s ministry just before He went to the Cross during His private
ministry to the eleven. These ‘Things to
come’ have been the focal point of much study in these the last days before
the Lord’s Second Coming, and the Psalmist here gives us a preview of that period of time as he requests
of the Lord in (v.1) ‘God be merciful
unto us, and bless us; and cause His face to shine upon us; Selah.’
His purpose for this request is found in (v.2) ‘That Thy way may be known upon earth, Thy saving health among all
nations.’ He wants the ways of the Lord to be known upon the earth, and the
saving health among all nations which are events that only will occur during
the Millennium when Christ rules and the earth is restored to an Eden-like
environment as described in Isaiah 65:17-25. In addition (v.3) also looks
forward to a time when ‘All the people
praise’ the Lord which will not happen until the day when Jesus returns as
Lord of lords and King of kings and then rules ‘With a rod of iron’ (Psalm 2:9; Revelation 2:27,12:5,19:15).
Further prophetic truth unfolds in (v.4) when the nations again are ‘Glad and sing for joy: for Thou shall judge
the people righteously, and govern the nations upon earth. Selah’ The Day
of the Lord is foreshadowed here as God’s judgment will come followed by His
governing ‘The nations upon earth’
which continues to focus upon the Millennial Reign of Christ, the thousand
years of His righteous rule upon earth, mentioned six times in Revelation 20. The
millennial emphasis continues in (v.5) ‘Let
all the people praise Thee, O God; let all the people praise Thee.’ The
universal praise of God asked for here, again focuses on the time when the
earth will be restored and the Lord Jesus Christ will be on His literal throne
here on earth located in Jerusalem called the Millennial Temple which is
explicitly described by Ezekiel in chapters 40-48.
The earth brings forth it’s abundance during this time of the physical
blessing of Israel as described in (v.6) ‘Then
shall the earth yield her increase; and God, even our own God, shall bless us.’
The emphasis on the God of Israel here shows the Psalmists literal expectation
for the God of the Hebrews to do what He said He would do as He promised in the
Word of God (Leviticus 26:4,5) And finally, in (v.7) the universal fear of the
Lord will be evident during that time showing that God will not only bring
abundant physical blessing, but His ultimate goal is the spiritual blessing
which will be realized when He is recognized for Who He is and all will bow the
knee and worship Him.
